Swears from the Curators of Cozy: Liz + Lizzy of Lewis

Some say it’s difficult to mix friendship and business. Others, like Liz Libre and Lizzy Ott of cult-favorite nursery brand Lewis, prove that beautiful brands can bloom from friendship. The talented duo attended both high school and college together – using their foundation of trust and history to weather the stormy patches, like those two months in college when everyone wore a feather in their hair for some reason. In June 2016, the design-minded mamas launched Lewis, filling the void in the market for nursery essentials that are childlike, rather than childish. And beyond beautiful. Take a peek at the Lewis Instagram and you’ll discover a dreamy wonderland where you feel invited and inspired to climb right under the covers, especially when the bedding in question is Lewis’ soft, organic collection in hand-drawn, nature-based prints. Lizzy is an interior architect and designer by trade, while Liz is the genius illustrator. So, when you have two creative and impossibly chic gals at the helm, who gets to be in charge? Again, friendship is the North Star. “I think it’s been easier for us to resolve conflicts because you can really put yourself in your partner’s place and try to understand where she’s coming from,” says Lizzy. We’ll SwearBy that. We invited Liz and Lizzy to SwearByHQ in Brooklyn and asked them to share some of their SwearBy secrets. You’ll love these gals so much that you’ll want to be friends with them, too.

1. Everyday Detox

Lizzy Ott: “A friend gave me this book while I was pregnant. Although I was initially insulted that they thought I’d even have time to cook after having a baby, it’s turned out to be a total lifesaver. These super easy recipes all have ten ingredients or less, incorporate fresh, healthy foods, and are so delicious!”

2. Splash of Color Coloring Book

Liz Libre: “I created this coloring and painting book, which includes my own original illustrations. It’s meant for easy framing and gifting. The drawings aren’t too intricate so it’s simple to fill in, which makes it so fun to do with kids. A few brush strokes, and your child looks like an artist.”

Lizzy: “My in-laws sent me a picture of everyone sitting around the table as a group and painting different pages from the book.”

Liz: “Aww…I forgot about that. That’s sweet.”

[Editor’s note: we agree! This awesome book was featured in our Kids’ Holiday Gift Guide!]

3. Jo Malone Cologne

“I’m happy to share a fragrance secret whenever somebody asks. For years now, one of my favorite traditions with my best friend is to meet in the West Village and pick out a new Jo Malone scent whenever we run out,” says Lizzy. “We explore all the different scents and pick something new depending on the season or our mood. I’m currently using the Nectarine Blossom and Honey scent- it’s so good!”

Liz: “I love that. I’m going to invite myself next time.”

4. Loeffler Randall Lulu Mule

Liz swears, “I’ve been a fan of Loeffler Randall for years now. These mules, called the Lulu, are my go-to shoe. They’re super comfortable and go with everything. Lizzy is also obsessed. We’ll show up to events both wearing these shoes, that’s how good they are.”

Lizzy: “It’s happened twice in the past week.”

5. Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Lizzy says: “This stuff is like magic. In my baby’s first year, this is the only diaper rash cream we’ve ever used. But it’s not just for babies! Any rough patches, red spots, and anything dry gets a dose of Aquaphor in our house. It’s the greatest multi-purpose moisturizer out there.”

Available on Amazon

6. Lewis Quilt

Liz: “I’ve always loved making and having quilts. This one is part of our line. They’re perfect to bring to the park, have in the nursery, use as a play mat… really anything! So easy to have around and so useful, we couldn’t live without them.”

7. Blinc Mascara

Lizzy: “I can’t remember when I found this mascara, maybe about ten years ago.”

Liz: “Ten years ago?!”

Lizzy: “Yes, and I’m a die-hard because every type of mascara, no matter how waterproof, would smudge under my eyes not even an hour later. I looked drunk, or something…This mascara comes off in little tubes, so it doesn’t smear like other mascaras. It’s all I ever use. Every time I walk past a Sephora, I’ll pick up another one.”

Available at Sephora

8. Suntegrity Sunscreen

Liz: “I have fair skin, so sunscreen is a must. This one is all-natural, smells amazing, a little citrus-y. It can be used on both your face and body. I found it at Follain, which has great products that pass through a vetted checklist of all-natural requirements and ingredients.”

Lizzy: “Follain has great products! I get eye cream, face oil from there…and I didn’t even hear about it from Liz!”

9. Lewis Burp Cloth

Lizzy: “Aside from its practical uses, our burp cloths are honestly adorable. I love to have it peeking out of my bag so I can show off the cute print. They’re super soft, durable, and as any new mom can attest, always useful!”

10. Chloe May Brown Plate

Liz raves, “This plate is made by Chloe May Brown, a Maine-based ceramicist. Her pieces are so lovely, and the site I buy them from, More & Co, is a well-curated shop that has a lot of other amazing artists, as well. My husband, John, always gets me a piece of hers for my holiday gifts, since he knows I love her work.”

11. OxiClean Stain Remover

Lizzy: “I try to be careful about buying all-natural products, but when it comes to getting stains out, nothing works better than the OxiClean spray. All of my daughter’s clothes would be ruined without it. I’ll travel with it.”

Liz:  [Laughs.] “You don’t leave the state of New York without it.”

12. Pentel Brush Pen

We can’t promise Liz’s wow-caliber talent, but at least you can have the illustration instrument that she swears by. “These pens make your handwriting look extra pretty on gift tags or envelopes. But, do be careful – the ink is permanent!” She pairs the pen with an Appointed notebook. “I love that it has perforated sheets that come in lined, grid or blank, along with the option to monogram, which I’ve done for myself and as gifts. Plus, they’re small enough to go everywhere every day.”

13. Madewell Jeans

Lizzy: “Basically all my jeans are from Madewell. I used to buy more expensive jeans to see what’s out there, but they were never as good as my Madewell jeans. All the high-waitsted ones work for me, every time. Now, they’re the only ones I buy.”
