This TikTok-Famous Dermatologist Says This Drugstore Vitamin C Is His Favorite

There are certain buzzy ingredients and skin care products that you hear about over and over again—hyaluronic acid, a lifesaver for dry skin; retinol, the powerhouse of anti-aging; salicylic acid, acne's worst enemy—you get the picture. No matter what trends come and go, a good-for-your skin ingredient is forever. Vitamin c is one such ingredient. Thanks to its ability to block free radicals and brighten complexions, the ingredient is common in everything from moisturizers to serums. But if you haven't started using it yet, you may be unsure where to start.

Spoiler alert: You don't necessarily need that cult classic serum that retails for over $150. Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist who has gained a following on TikTok thanks to his easy-to-follow skincare videos, says there’s a serum available at your local Target that’ll definitely get the job done — Bliss Bright Idea Vitamin C + Tri-Peptide Collagen Protecting & Brightening Serum

Below, Dr. Zeichner explains how and why you should incorporate vitamin C into your skincare routine, plus why he swears by this drugstore serum.

SwearBy (SB): Why should someone use vitamin C?

Dr. Joshua Zeichner (JZ): Vitamin C has three main benefits for the skin. It protects the skin and neutralizes free radical damage from environmental exposures like the sun, pollution, and high-energy visible light. Think of vitamin C as an insurance policy on your sunscreen to help protect your skin and prevent damage. It also blocks the production of abnormal pigment to lighten dark spots and even skin tone. Finally, vitamin C is needed for the production of healthy new collagen.

SB: How do you incorporate vitamin C into your skincare routine?

JZ: I recommend Vitamin C  every morning under your sunscreen.   It works with your sunscreen to protect the skin against harmful UV rays from the sun.  Unlike ingredients like retinol, you do not have to build up a tolerance for Vitamin C products.

SB: Why is the Bliss Bright Idea Vitamin C your favorite at the drugstore?

JZ: This serum contains a stabilized form of vitamin C along with a specialized peptide to protect, brighten, and strengthen the skin. These peptides are messengers that tell your skin to do a specific job.  Some reduce inflammation, others aid in hydration, and the peptides used in this product help stimulate collagen to strengthen the skin.

Vitamin C can also be a finicky ingredient that is easily inactivated by exposure to UV light or even the wrong pH. The Bliss serum uses a stable form of vitamin C known as ethyl ascorbic acid which helps keep the vitamin C stable in the bottle and enhances penetration into the skin.
