Headed Outdoors? Shop Our Editors' Summer Must-Haves

Summer vacations with friends, kids summer camps, and annual family gatherings might all be on pause this year, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the great outdoors. As long as you follow some restrictions, socially distance yourself, and wear a mask, there are still plenty of options for soaking up the sun. All you need is an open mind and some fun accessories. We tapped our SwearBy community to see what products they'll be using this summer. From inflatable pool floats to protective sunscreen, here's what you need to kick off a fun and safe summer spent outside.

FUNBOY Inflatable Red Lip Couch Pool Float

What’s a summer pool party without a fun pool float? The best part? Because of social distancing measures, you don’t have to share it with anyone. So heed Jayla Andrulonis‘ advice, grab a book and a drink (this one has a cup holder), lay back in this adorable pool float, and have a relaxing sunny afternoon. Oh, and don’t forget to snap a photo for the ‘Gram. “You can check out my Instagram in a few days because if you don’t have a picture on your pool float, do you even *have* a pool float?” says Jayla.

EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 46

Jessica Leigh Mattern has tested dozens upon dozens of sunscreens in hopes of finding a formula that’s fast-absorbing, lightweight, and easy-to-wear under her makeup. She finally went with one her dermatologist recommended: EltaMD’s UV Clear Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. It did not disappoint! “I love how quickly it sinks into my skin — and it doesn’t leave a milky or shiny film on my skin like some other sunscreens do. It looks like I’m wearing nothing, and sits comfortably under my go-to foundation,” she wrote. Celebrities are also big fans of this product and brand (as well as a few other SwearBy Editors). If you’re looking for a sunscreen that will endure hours spent outdoors, give this one a go.

Privé Revaux Eyewear Candy

Sunglasses are more than just a stylish accessory — they are a must for protecting your eyes, especially during the summer! But if you are going to wear them (and you should), why not pick cute ones, like Maya Gandara. “I’m absolutely smitten with these super cute sunglasses! I always keep them on me for whenever I leave the house. They fit my face super well, and block out harmful UV rays perfectly,” she wrote.

Brixton Joanna Straw Hat

Whether you’re headed to the beach or the mountains (or even for a walk around your neighborhood), be sure to equip yourself with a hat. Stephanie Perry suggests this chic straw hat from Brixton as an added layer of protection to sunscreen. “In addition to protecting my skin, I like that this straw find has a classic design that matches all my bathing suits and sundresses. It’s comfortable, easy to wear, and elevates my look,” she says.

Cindy Sherman Oops Phone Pool Float

If you’re looking for a pool float that doubles as a conversation starter, Laura Reilly has a fun one for you. “This surreal pool float is objectively hideous, but that’s kind of the point,” she writes. Renowned artist Cindy Sherman designed it in conjunction with MoMA and the nonprofit Friends of + POOL. “Anyone familiar with her work knows that a bizarre, vaguely difficult-to-look-at selfie is the bare minimum. Framed in an iPhone-styled border, the self-portrait floatie is the welcome antithesis to the swans and donuts found in most pools,” she says. It’s basically like owning your own piece of art.

Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Spray

Yes, sunscreen is a must, but sometimes, sunburns happen and your skin will likely need some T.L.C. after all of that time spent outdoors. Christie Calucchia suggests grabbing a bottle of soothing aloe very spray. This one from Sun Bum also has vitamin E providing an intense hydration to gently restore the skin’s natural moisture balance. “When I get the occasional sunburn after a day spent outside by the pool or in the park, I spray on this soothing spray packed with aloe and vitamin E. It instantly cools down and moisturizes the skin without leaving a greasy finish,” she says.

Nike 'Feather Light' Dri-FIT Cap

If straw hats aren’t your thing and you’re looking for a hat that can withstand a more active outdoor exercise, consider this Nike Dri-Fit hat. “Sun protection is super important for me since I have very fair skin, which is why I always wear this Nike hat when I do any outdoor activity,” says Rebecca Carhart. “Not only does the lightweight hat protect me from the sun’s damaging rays, but the moisture-wicking material helps absorbs sweat, and the mesh vents on the top keep me cool as I play tennis or go for a jog on a hot summer day.” The best part? It goes with everything. Pair it with your workout outfit, some jean shorts, or your swimsuit.
