Beach Bag Swears from Packing Expert Hitha Palepu

She runs the blog Hitha On the Go and she’s even authored a book called How to Pack: Travel Smart for Any Trip but Hitha Palepu swears that she became a packing expert by accident. As a business development executive in the pharmaceutical industry, she was traveling three weeks out of every month, and packing became a way of life. Hitha’s packing philosophy? “I think about what I want to do, who I’m packing for, and what I actually need.” Now founder and CEO of Rho Pharmaceuticals and mom to a three-year-old son, Hitha is still very much on the go. A self-proclaimed “promiscuous traveler,” the busy mom almost never returns to the same destination twice–with the exception of Glenmere Mansion in Chester, NY, as the annual getaway that she swears by for a couple’s retreat. As we wrestled with what to pack for a weekend at the beach, we decided to turn to the pro. Here, Hitha shares her Swears for a stress-free, perfectly packable day at the beach…

AQUA Canvas Tote Bag

This is from the Bloomingdale’s in-store brand, AQUA. I’ve been lusting after the Chanel beach bag for a while, but, let’s be real. I couldn’t justify the price. When I saw this bag, I thought it was a nice substitute. I love that it’s got both the long chain straps and the shorter handles. It’s really roomy, it has plenty of pockets, and it’s a great travel bag too. So even if I’m traveling to a beach vacation, it fits everything I need.

Old Navy Swim Cover-Up

When you know you’re going to have a popsicle inevitably melted on you…Beach cover-ups basically get ruined after a season or two. So when I’m buying my son’s clothes, I like to pick up a few pieces for myself for the beach as well. This one is just gauzy, easy, comfy, and affordable.

Helen Kaminski 'Mita' Packable Raffia Visor

I’m bringing visors back! To be honest, I don’t know why they ever left; I’m really into the sporty look. This one is from Helen Kaminski, and it’s her packable sun visor. It also has UPF 50 protection, it packs down into nothing, and it’s cute. I dig it.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50

This SPF 50 sunscreen is truly non-greasy, which I love, and it absorbs beautifully. It’s hydrating, so I like to put it on right after I get out of the shower, before I go to the beach. I like that it’s also available at drugstores, so if I do forget it at home, I can just drop into a drugstore and find it.

All Weather Gold Bangles Serenity Prayer

These are actually meditation bangles. You’re supposed to chant a mantra every time you slip one on, to start and end your day, which is awesome. I also love that they’re basically rubber, so they’re comfortable and easy to travel with. No need to worry about hot metal burning your skin after a day in the sun! They’re the perfect accessory for the beach, but you also won’t mind getting them dirty.

The Map of Salt and Stars

I’m always reading. If I have even five minutes to spare, I will turn on my Kindle or crack open a book. This one is a beautiful story that alternates between two young women, living eight hundred years apart. One is a medieval adventurer, and the other, a modern-day Syrian refugee. It’s stunningly written, very heartwarming, and makes me more empathetic to what other people are going through on this planet.

Dagne Dover Pouch - Elle Clutch

All of Dagne Dover’s products are hyper organized, with pockets upon pockets. I like to throw my iPad, Kindle and earbuds in here, or I’ll stash beauty products inside a Ziploc bag so they don’t spill.

We think you deserve to buy only awesome things. We've asked the most discerning women out there to share what they honestly, truly swear by so you can get on with life and find your next favorite product, faster (and without all the sponsored BS).
