5 Swears to Keep Your New-Mama Sanity
Hi! Let me introduce myself. I’m Erin Pasquet. I’ve been a model in NYC for almost 17 years. I’m also a pre/postnatal yoga and fitness instructor, birth and postpartum doula, lactation counselor and childbirth educator. I’m a new mom to a little boy (7 months). I’m passionate about improving not only your pregnancy and birth experience but the new parent experience as well. Because let me tell you, it can be challenging! I thought I knew what I was getting into and prepared but the reality of it 24/7 was far more intense than I had anticipated. So how do you keep your sanity when you’re sleep deprived, leaking fluids from multiple places, and on a hormonally induced emotional roller coaster? Here are my top 5 items to keep your new mama sanity.
Solly Baby Wrap Carrier
A soft carrier like the Solly Baby or K’tan. Babies as small as 7 lbs can be carried this way. It’s an instant soother for a fussy baby, frees up your hands, and allows you some freedom of movement while keeping baby close. Trust me. You can do almost anything while wearing your baby. Like make a meal, go to the bathroom, and run errands. My baby still is soothed the best this way when he’s in a grumpy spell.
Stylish Spoon OatMEAL Cups
Food can be so hard to get in, with all of the feeding, diapering, soothing and sleep that you’re doing with a newborn. These Oatmeal Chia cups are delicious and packed full of good nutrients. Just pop in the microwave or oven and breakfast is ready. My favorite flavors are blueberry and chocolate. I eat them two at a time. If I’m feeling really hungry I’ll even top it with a scoop of peanut butter for an extra punch.
LUA Eye Beam Oil
For the many lost hours of sleep, late nights and early mornings this eye oil is the only thing keeping me looking alert and fresh. It smells wonderful, is all natural and vegan. It’s light but powerful. This and a little under eye concealer and you’re ready to go!
Gaiam Balance Ball, Grey, 65cm
I highly recommend an exercise/ Swiss ball to pregnant clients for labor but it is great for after as well. Again, it’s a wonderful way to soothe a fussy baby. You can bounce, rock, sway and even lay baby on the ball for some supported tummy time. Put baby in a soft carrier like Solly Baby and bounce away, saving your arms and back from exhaustion. For average height people I recommend a 65cm ball, for shorter a 55cm and tall people a 75cm.
Kindred Bravely Sleep Bras
I really like the soft fabrication and the sizing of Kindred Bravely’s bras. Since I have a small ribcage but a full bust they make options for that as well! I didn’t realize that I would need a sleep bra prior to having a baby and was surprised to find out how much I leaked milk. Once my milk came in, it was everywhere! Some people leak more than others so it’s nice to have a couple on hand pre baby and ready to go. Pair with nursing pads (I like the reusable ones, also from Kindred Bravely for night time use) and you’re good to go! You’ll want a bra that’s comfortable and supportive without being restrictive. The gentle support will help reduce leakage and keep the nursing pads in place.
