Becoming by Michelle Obama
I’m the first born child of a first born child...driven and fond of checking tasks and accomplishments off lists. I’ve also on more than one occasion in my life found myself in a job or relationship that met my accomplishment ‘list’ but didn’t fulfill my soul. This book reminded me that we are constantly learning, growing and becoming...and if I’m brave enough I can get off a path that doesn’t suit me anytime I want or need to and go in a different direction even as I (gulp) approach middle age. Powerful stuff!
Michelle Obama's novel, "Becoming", is one of the most influential memoirs I've read so far. The book is touching, relatable, inspiring, and at times funny. Ms. Obama will inspire you to choose empathy instead of apathy, and to take action in the face of injustice. She influences the reader to choose optimism because in her words, it is "a force that's larger and more potent than any one election, leader, or news story." It is "a form of faith, an antidote to fear."
The book has gotten a ton of hype... but it totally lives up to it! Michelle is a great storyteller and a very thoughtful writer. This book is a look at her life as a wife, mother and working professional. There were so moments where I audibly said "YES" reading a passage about motherhood, or empathized with her struggles. Some parts even left me thinking differently about something based on a story or perspective she shared. Highly recommend it—no matter your politics.
