CEO Swears: Sugar Paper Co-Founders Share Their Swears for Keeping It All Organized

Chelsea Shukov and Jamie Grobecker, the co-founders of superchic stationary brand Sugar Paper, are close. They’ve been attached at the hip for 15 years, as they’ve transformed the art of letterpress into a lifestyle, launching Sugar Paper stores, hundreds of stockists, and collaborations with Target (#nobigdeal). While the world was decidedly migrating online, Chelsea and Jamie created a destination for “paper people” like themselves. “Everybody talks about paper going away, but really, people have more love for it now than they ever have,” says Chelsea. “Paper feels thoughtful, special, beautiful.” Once college friends who bonded over their similar styles and tastes, today, these partners have been known to show up to the same meeting accidentally twinning in matching outfits. Chelsea and Jamie live a stone’s throw from each other in Los Angeles with kids and husbands who socialize and vacation together like a close-knit family. They laugh easily and often, pranking each other with a golden peanut that finds its way on to each of their desks, making it a bit easier to balance the frenetic pace of business and family life. Chelsea and Jamie are putting their (Sugar Paper) calendars into overdrive this back-to-school season, coordinating preschool phase-ins and merchandising meetings, all in their signature sophisticated style. Here, they share some of their CEO-worthy Swears that make it look like you’ve got it all together, even when you really don’t.

1. Olio E Osso Balm

Chelsea: “This is the perfect on-the-go blush that you can also use for lips. I keep it in my bag for a little pick-me-up. My friend told me about it, and they sell it at Goop around the corner from us in the Brentwood Country Mart. I prefer the brownish colors to the pinks. I’m a number 6.”

2. Sugar Paper Perfect Dot Spiral Notebook

Jamie: “Notes. Lists. Life. This is how we function! It’s the perfect size to carry everywhere; it’s not too big and not too small. And it doesn’t make you feel like you’re in school.”

3. Clare V Foldover Clutch

Chelsea: “I have these in multiple colors and they’re great. I throw them in my work bag and then I take them out to dinner on business trips. It looks like a purse and then I toss one of our Sugar Paper pouches inside to organize all my stuff. They’re cute.”

Jamie: “This is one of those things I stole from Chelsea’s playbook, and now I swear by Clare V clutches when I travel.”

4. Cuyana Classic Leather Tote with Organizational Insert

“I love a big leather bag that I can put my laptop in but that I can also use as a purse. It’s not realistic for me that I can carry a purse that doesn’t hold a laptop! The best part about this is that it has an organizational insert that has compartments for everything. I have it monogrammed, which I always love.”

Chelsea: “I use it, too. We try not to get the same colors of everything so we don’t look like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.”

Tote-ally Organized

5. Sugar Paper Monthly Calendar

Chelsea: “This thing is beyond. It’s a simple calendar that gives you the entire montly view, and I find that I get a better read on my month when I map it out here. I use it mostly for the kids’ planning, but it’s helpful when I’m trying to schedule a lunch, too. I put everything down on paper first — obviously, we’re paper girls — but then I’ll transfer it to my phone.”

Be a 'Paper Person'

6. Hydro Blur Primer from Dermalogica

Jamie: “I love this product. I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup, but I swear it practically makes pores go away, which is amazing. I’m not sure what it does, really, but it just makes your skin look so fresh!”

Chelsea: “It’s like a tinted moisturizer, without being tinted!”

Primer Perfection

7. Herschel Highland Suitcase

Chelsea: “It’s the best. We had a weeklong business trip to Minnesota and then New York City, and I was able to fit everything in this carry-on — even clothes for cold weather — and still fit it in the overhead. They thought about everything when they made this. It has all the compartments and pockets to keep everything compact, but it’s still well-priced and cute. And, it’s not too ‘businessy’; it’s hip.”

8. Sugar Paper Fabric Pouch: Faded Stripe

Jamie: “We are obsessed, not just because we make them. I have it monogrammed, and it makes me happy. Chelsea uses it as a purse or inside her purse. I use it to hold my electric cords or as a makeup bag.”

Chelsea: “She uses it as her daughter’s snack pack!”

Jamie: “My daughter came home one day and gave me seven orders, like, ‘I need one for Lucy, one for so-and-so…’ I said, you can’t take orders from everyone at school!”

Chelsea: (laughs) “Well, maybe she can!”

Multi-Purpose Pouch

9. Serge Lutens Makeup Remover

Chelsea: “These teeny makeup wipes are so amazing and moisturizing. I use them specifically for removing eye makeup. I rip them in half because they are so powerful and that’s all you really need.”

Jamie: “Every time we travel, I’ll ring her from my room, asking, can I come grab one of your makeup wipes?”

Take It Off

10. Apple Wireless Air Pods

Jamie: “I initially didn’t seek these out, but my husband got them for me. I love to walk in the morning. So, if I can walk on the beach, get a few calls done, without wires hanging everywhere, it’s a win for me. I didn’t love using Bluetooth in the car, because, if you have small kids like I do, they’re a part of the whole conversation. Now these have become an everyday Swear for me, for sure.”

Chelsea: “I don’t have these, but I feel like this is an idea I need to embrace!”

Jamie: (laughs) “Yes! You’ll be asking ‘what was I doing with all these cords?!'”
