5 Swears from Object Curator and Prop Stylist Randi Brookman Harris

Randi Brookman Harris is a Brooklyn-based prop stylist who “makes things look pretty” for a living. She’s an in-demand stylist whom Target, Warby Parker, J.Crew, Clinique (and many other companies that are nearly as groovy as she is) rely on to tell stories through product-based vignettes. Recently, Randi curated the all-yellow shop for the wildly popular, sold-out Color Factory in San Francisco. She has been drawn to objects and storytelling her whole life, finding meaning in color, texture, and shape. When actual people aren’t featured in editorial photos or advertising campaigns, she painstakingly finds just the right combination of props large and small to breathe creative life into any setting and convey the right message and mood. “I buy things, source things, find things, get people to make things….” She’s a regular PhD of things. If you can picture, invent, create or conceive of it, Randi can find it and showcase it in ways that keep clients coming back for more. We chased Randi down on the High Line in NYC on her way to the Whitney Museum, and lucky for us, she opened up her handbag to share her Swears.

1. Papermate Flair

“I love the thick, crisp black line. I don’t like a pen that’s wishy-washy. I like a pen with a purposeful line, where there’s no mistake – you say what you want to say. I buy boxes of them in bulk and have one in every bag.”

2. Agent Nateur Deodorant

“I’ve been concerned about the aluminium and other chemicals in deodorants for some time, and so I didn’t wear deodorant for years, and it was bad. I would keep wipes in my purse at all times. That only works for so long, you know? I discovered this and it’s so natural, you could eat it. But seriously, I’ve never had that issue again. Even my husband uses it.”

3. Anastasia Brow Wiz

The night I met my husband, I was at the tail end of an excruciating brow grow-out intervention from over-plucking in the ’90s. [Editor’s note: who wasn’t?!] I had just spent eight weeks sitting on my hands not touching them.  When I finally got them groomed, I would have done anything the famous brow lady told me. She said that defining my brows, even though the hair is dark, is important to keep them from looking blurry. The Brow Wiz pencil is thin enough to never give a sloppy line, retractable so you don’t need to sharpen it, and sturdy enough that the product never breaks in the pencil shaft or melts and shifts on my face when it’s hot. The brush on the other end is a non-negotiable brow tool, so it’s convenient to have it all in one.

4. In the Company of Women, by Grace Bonney

“My friend Grace Bonney wrote In the Company of Women, which is a collection of interviews and portraits of different women and their workspaces. It was a personal and professional honor to be featured in this book. It’s full of creative, entrepreneurial women and inspirational stories.”

[Editor’s note: Randi even made it onto the cover. How cool is that?]

5. Eva Naturals Vitamin C+ Serum

“I alternate between two Eva Naturals serums for day and night. The daytime Vitamin C Serum is so refreshing, and makes my skin feel dewy and plump after I wash my face and before I seal it in with my moisturizer. This Vitamin C+ Serum is what I wear at nighttime and it has added retinol and salicylic acid, so it’s acne-fighting without the burning that you can get from Retin A. I’m really sensitive and could never get used to that! I apply this after washing my face at night and then add a richer moisturizer. This product, combined with a dietary shift after I figured out I had a gluten intolerance, have really helped my skin calm down a lot.”
